National Lotteries Commission Internships 2026/2027 - Job Description

Introduction

The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has opened applications for its 2026/2027 Graduate and Student Internship Programme. Successful interns serve for 24 months and receive a monthly stipend for the full duration, which gives young South Africans a long, structured period of paid workplace learning.

Placements are available at the Pretoria Head Office and in provincial offices in Limpopo, North West, Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, the Free State, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape. The fields range from internal audit and legal services to marketing, human capital and project management, so graduates from many different disciplines can find a match.

Important: the closing date is 28 October 2026, which is today. If you qualify, submit your application immediately.

About the Company

The National Lotteries Commission regulates the national lottery and oversees how lottery proceeds are distributed to good causes. It is a public entity, so its interns experience how regulation, governance, funding and community development work together inside a government-linked organisation.

Placing interns in both a head office and provincial offices lets the NLC bring development opportunities close to where young people live. That spread of offices is one reason this programme draws so many applicants every year, and why a clear, well-matched application matters.

Responsibilities

The advert lists the departments and offices where interns are placed rather than a task-by-task description. Your duties will depend on your placement, but the available areas are:

  • Internal Audit & Advisory Services (Head Office): BCom Internal Audit or Forensic Investigations graduates
  • Finance (Head Office): Financial Management, Financial Accounting or Building Management
  • Legal Services and Regulatory Compliance (Head Office): LLB graduates
  • Business Development (Head Office): Monitoring & Evaluation, Industrial Psychology, Business Administration or Project Management
  • Stakeholder Management, Marketing & Communications (Head Office): Marketing, Communications or Multimedia
  • Human Capital Management (Head Office): Human Resources Management, Human Resources Development or Industrial Psychology
  • Provincial offices: Polokwane (Limpopo), Mafikeng (North West), Pretoria (Gauteng), East London (Eastern Cape), Nelspruit (Mpumalanga), Welkom (Free State), Kimberley (Northern Cape) and Cape Town (Western Cape)

Provincial placements generally call for qualifications in Public or Business Administration, Public Management, Project Management or Monitoring and Evaluation. Some offices also accept an N6 Management Assistant qualification.

Required Qualifications

In addition to the field-specific qualification above, every applicant must meet these general requirements:

  • Be between 18 and 35 years old
  • Have completed a degree, National Diploma or N4 to N6 National Certificate
  • Have never taken part in an internship programme before
  • Be a South African citizen
  • Have no criminal record

The Western Cape office also requires a driver's licence. Note the rule about previous internships: if you have already completed another internship programme, you are not eligible for this one.

Job Benefits and Perks

The headline benefit is the length of the programme: 24 months of paid placement, with a monthly stipend throughout. The advert does not give the stipend amount, so confirm it when you are contacted.

  • Two full years of workplace experience in a public entity
  • A monthly stipend for the whole programme
  • Placements across many fields, including audit, law, finance, HR, marketing and project management
  • A choice of head office or provincial placement, which may allow you to work closer to home
  • Strong experience for later applications in government and the wider public sector

How to Apply

Apply through the National Lotteries Commission. Visit the official NLC website and look for the 2026/2027 internship advert. Because the closing date is today, 28 October 2026, do not delay.

Have these ready:

  • A CV that clearly states the field and office you are applying for
  • A certified copy of your South African ID, to confirm citizenship and age
  • Certified copies of your qualification or academic record
  • A statement that you have not previously done an internship, if the application asks for it

If you miss this closing date, keep an eye on the NLC site and on our career blog for the next intake. Never pay money to anyone claiming they can secure you an internship, since legitimate public entities do not charge application fees. Also read the advert carefully for the exact qualification wording of your chosen field, because applicants who do not match the stated qualification are unlikely to be shortlisted.
