SCIENTIST PRODUCTION GRADE A: AQUACULTURE INNOVATION - Job Description

Introduction

SCIENTIST PRODUCTION GRADE A Application must be submitted on a signed Z83 form obtainable from any Public Service Department, accompanied by a recent detailed Curriculum Vitae only, to be considered. Entry level requirements for SMS posts: In terms of the Directive on Compulsory Capacity Development, Mandatory Training Days & Minimum Entry Requirements for SMS that was introduced on 1 April 2015, a requirement for all applicants for SMS posts from 1 April 2020 is a successful completion of the Senior Management Pre-Entry Programme as endorsed by the National School of Government (NSG) prior to appointment. The course is available at the NSG under the name Certificate for entry into SMS and the full details can be obtained by following the below link: https://www.thensg.gov.za/training-course/sms-pre-entryprogramme. Furthermore, Shortlisted candidates must provide proof of successful completion of the course. 

All candidates shortlisted for the posts will be subjected to a technical exercise that intends to test relevant technical elements of the job. Following the interview and the technical exercise of all SMS posts, the Selection Panel will recommend candidates to attend a generic managerial competency assessment in compliance with the DPSA Directive on the implementation of competency-based assessments. 

Persons appointed will be subjected to a security clearance, the signing of performance agreement and employment contract.

Responsibilities

Undertake basic and applied aquaculture and inland fisheries research on priority species in line with the Aquaculture Research and Technology programme and inland fisheries policy. Provide information on new technologies and research developments through continuous professional developments. Perform scientific analysis and regulatory functions. Gather, interpret and statistically evaluate empirical and experimental data to inform policy and practice. Compile detailed technical and scientific reports, proposals, concept notes and policy briefs for departmental identity and consolidate sectoral needs for methodologies and decision-support tools in inland aquaculture and inland fisheries. Monitor and evaluate aquaculture research programmes and demonstrate activities. Support the ATDC with optimizing breeding and hatchery programmes. Maintain effective stakeholder and client relationships to promote adoption of best practices and evidence based approaches. Mentor, train and supervise candidate scientists, interns, students and aquaculture technicians at the ATDC and provide structured learning and development opportunities to support growth of technical capacity in the sector

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s (BSc) Honours Degree (NQF8) in Aquaculture/ Agriculture/ Ichthyology/ Aquatic Parasitology/ Zoology or equivalent qualification within the related field as recognised by SAQA. Three (3) years’ post-qualification experience in aquaculture research and compulsory registration with the SACNASP as a Professional Natural Scientist. 

Theoretical and practical knowledge of aquaculture production systems, inland fisheries, breeding and aquatic animal health and welfare. Proven ability to carry out quantitative analysis and report and peer reviewed scientific publication writing and scientific reviews. Knowledge of animal ethics as it relates to animal research.

 Familiar with software applications and statistical analysis of data. Knowledge of animal ethics as it relates to animal and applied aquaculture research. Practical aquaculture breeding, aquatic animal handling and biosecurity skills. 

 Good communication, analytical and problem solving and analysis skills. A valid driver’s licence.
