SA Government Internships 2026/2027 - Job Description
Introduction
The South African Government offers internship programmes for unemployed South African graduates who need practical work experience and want to improve their employability. These programmes are usually hosted in national, provincial and local government departments and in public entities, and they help bridge the gap between studying and working.
This guide collects the programmes that are currently advertised, along with their closing dates, so that you can see at a glance what is still open on 28 October 2026. Some deadlines have already passed, and others close within days, so read the dates carefully.
Use this post as a starting point, then visit each organisation's official channels to read the full advert and apply.
About the Company
Government internships exist because many graduates struggle to get their first job without experience. By placing young people inside departments and public entities, government aims to give them skills, a professional network and a work record.
Placements may be in national departments, provincial departments, municipalities or state-owned entities, and they are usually fixed-term, often lasting twelve to twenty-four months. Each organisation sets its own qualification requirements, so always check the individual advert.
Responsibilities
Duties depend on the department and your qualification. Interns generally assist with administration, research, reporting, finance, IT support, communications or project work, under the guidance of a supervisor. The programmes currently advertised are listed below with the closing date given for each.
- South African Police Service (SAPS), Police Trainees: closes 13 November 2026
- Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) Internships: closes 2 November 2026
- CSPS Internships (Forensic, Graphic Design, Admin, IT, Auditing, Computer Science): closes 30 October 2026
- Eskom Internships (IT, Marketing, PR, Journalism, Graphic Design, Business): closes 30 October 2026
- Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, entry-level jobs: closes 30 October 2026
- Department of Agriculture, Administration Clerk (Losses & Claims): closes 30 October 2026
- JICS Independent Correctional Centre Visitor: closes 31 October 2026
- SARS Graduate Talent Pool, Gauteng College of Nursing Nurse Traineeship (2027 intake) and the City of Tshwane Ithuba Youth Economic Development Programme: no closing date was stated
- Already closed: CSIR ICT Internships (26 October), National Department of Forestry administration clerks (26 October) and the SASSA entry-level grant administrator posts (23 October)
Required Qualifications
Requirements differ between programmes, but government internships commonly ask for the following:
- South African citizenship, with a certified copy of your ID
- A completed degree, diploma or N-level certificate in the relevant field
- Being unemployed and not having completed a similar internship before
- An age within the youth bracket stated in the advert, often 18 to 35
- No criminal record, which is checked during screening
Entry-level administration posts may accept a Grade 12 certificate instead of a tertiary qualification. For public service posts, the standard application form is the Z83, which you must complete and attach with your CV and certified documents.
Job Benefits and Perks
Benefits vary by programme, but the general advantages of a government internship are clear:
- A stipend or allowance during the placement, with the amount set by each employer (for example, SAPS trainees receive R5,000 per month)
- Practical experience in public administration, finance, IT, law enforcement or technical fields
- A work record and references for later job applications
- Exposure to how public institutions plan, budget and deliver services
- A stepping stone towards permanent government jobs, which are often advertised to experienced and internal candidates first
Because stipends differ so widely, always read the full advert for the figures and conditions of your chosen programme.
How to Apply
Every programme has its own application route, so start from the organisation that is advertising. Visit the official South African Government website and go to the relevant department, municipality or public entity to find the correct vacancy page.
To apply effectively:
- Prioritise the posts that close first and apply for them immediately
- Complete a Z83 form where the advert asks for one, and sign it
- Certify copies of your ID, qualifications and any other documents the advert lists
- Tailor your CV to each programme instead of sending the same one to all of them
- Keep a record of what you applied for and the closing dates
Public service recruitment is free. Do not pay anyone to place you on a programme, and report anyone who offers guaranteed placement in exchange for money.
