Mastercard Associate Consultant Graduate Programme 2027 - Job Description

Introduction

Mastercard is recruiting Associate Consultants for its 2027 Graduate Programme in Johannesburg. As an Associate Consultant, you work in small teams that help some of the world's biggest brands answer and carry out solutions to their hardest strategic questions.

You take ownership of deliverables and build relationships with external clients. The work focuses on technology and data and exposes you to many industries, including financial services, retail, restaurants and hospitality. Two specialisation tracks are open, Strategy & Transformation and Marketing.

Applications close on 5 November 2026. Final-year students and recent graduates who expect to complete between November 2026 and August 2027 are invited to apply.

About the Company

Mastercard is a global technology company in the payments industry. Beyond processing payments, it runs advisory and analytics teams that help banks, merchants and other businesses use data to grow, improve customer experience and make better decisions.

The Associate Consultant role sits in that advisory side of the business. It is closer to management consulting than to a traditional banking role, with project-based work, client presentations and fast learning.

Responsibilities

The advert describes the two tracks separately, and your main project work depends on the track you are placed in. You will still be encouraged to work across tracks to pick up varied skills.

Strategy & Transformation: You guide clients through strategic, tactical, operational and transformational challenges to improve performance and operations. Engagements cover product development, marketing, customer loyalty and innovation, often with clients from many industries, including Fortune 500 companies. The role aligns with the practices of traditional management consulting firms.

Marketing: You develop strategies and lead the implementation of marketing campaigns and engagements, then evaluate the results to drive performance for Mastercard's clients. You provide direct marketing expertise across channels, using customer, behavioural and transactional data, and define tangible results for both the client and Mastercard.

Across both tracks, you collaborate in small teams, own your deliverables and build external relationships with clients.

Required Qualifications

The advert lists three requirements:

  • An undergraduate or master's degree with an expected graduation date between November 2026 and August 2027
  • The ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, verbally and in writing, in English
  • Availability to start in March or September 2027

Note that no specific field of study is stated, so graduates from many backgrounds may apply, provided they can show strong analytical and communication skills. Important: state your first track preference on your CV, either Strategy & Transformation or Marketing. Mastercard uses this to match applicants with their preferred track.

Job Benefits and Perks

The advert does not list salary figures, but it explains what the role gives you professionally:

  • Work on meaningful projects with some of the world's biggest brands
  • Broad exposure to financial services, retail, restaurants, hospitality and more
  • Ownership of your own deliverables from an early stage
  • Experience building external relationships with clients
  • The freedom to work across both tracks and gain varied skills
  • Direct exposure to a consulting-style career at a global technology company

Consulting-style graduate roles are demanding, but they provide steep learning curves. Ask about salary, benefits and career progression at interview stage. Graduates who enjoy variety, can handle ambiguity and like explaining their ideas to senior people tend to do best in this kind of role.

How to Apply

Apply through Mastercard. Visit the official Mastercard website and search for the Associate Consultant Graduate Programme 2027 in Johannesburg. The closing date is 5 November 2026.

Prepare the following:

  • A CV that states your first track preference clearly at the top
  • Your expected graduation date, since it must fall between November 2026 and August 2027
  • Your availability to start in March or September 2027
  • Examples of teamwork, leadership and analytical problem solving

Consulting interviews often include case questions, where you are asked to structure a business problem and talk through your reasoning. Practise a few before you are invited, for example by estimating the size of a market or suggesting how a retailer could win more loyal customers, and always state your assumptions out loud. Write clear, concise sentences on your CV, because written English is part of the assessment. Never pay a fee to apply for a graduate programme.
