About this Social Worker Grade 1 position

Introduction

Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital has two Grade 1 Social Worker posts in its Therapeutics (Social Services) unit. A first job in a hospital setting is fine here, because no experience is required. You do need a valid driver's licence and computer skills, and the salary is R338 106 a year plus service benefits.

About the Company

The posts are in the Therapeutics (Social Services) unit at CHBAH, a public teaching hospital in Soweto run by the Gauteng Department of Health.

Responsibilities

• Provide social work services that support, protect and develop vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities
• Deal with any matter that could cause or come from social instability
• Keep up with new developments in social work and social welfare by reading professional journals and studying the legal and policy framework
• Complete the continuing professional development required of you
• Handle the administrative side of the job
• Be willing to work in different parts of the hospital, including the psychiatric unit, on a rotation or when allocated

Required Qualifications

• A qualification that allows registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Worker
• Current SACSSP registration for 2026
• Computer literacy and a valid South African driver's licence
• No experience required
• Skills in counselling, communication, planning, organising, problem solving, time and stress management and conflict resolution, plus the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
• Knowledge of the South African laws on social services, and the ability to work with people from different backgrounds
• An advantage: an internship or practicum in a hospital or primary health care facility, and exposure to working at CHBAH (current CHBAH Covid staff get preference)

Job Benefits and Perks

R338 106 per year, plus service benefits.

How to Apply

Apply online only, through the Gauteng E-Recruitment portal (jobs.gauteng.gov.za). Hand-delivered, faxed and emailed applications are not accepted, and nobody should ask you to pay anything to apply.

Your application needs a fully completed, signed new Z83 form (get it from any public service department or www.dpsa.gov.za/documents) and an up-to-date, detailed CV. Fill in Parts A, C and D of the Z83, write the post reference number on your application, and leave the professional-registration question blank if it doesn't apply to you. No new Z83 or no detailed CV means automatic disqualification.

Don't upload certified copies yet. HR will only ask shortlisted candidates for certified documents (not older than 6 months) on or before the interview day. Foreign qualifications must come with a SAQA evaluation certificate.

Before any appointment the hospital runs suitability checks: criminal record, citizenship, qualification verification, company directorship, social media, financial record and references. The recommended candidate may also go through medical surveillance under the OHS Act. The department can decide not to fill the post.

Trouble with the portal? Email healthjobqueries@gauteng.gov.za.

Questions about the post: Ms Haarhoff on (011) 933 0268, or Ms Mazibuko on (011) 933 8394 or Margaret.Mazibuko@gauteng.gov.za.

Never pay to apply. Legitimate employers and government departments do not charge application fees. If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.
