Using AI to Apply for Jobs in South Africa: 60 Prompts That Do It Properly
You found a vacancy. You open an AI chat, type "write me a CV", and get back something generic, full of clichés, and possibly with details you never gave it.
That is how most people use AI for job hunting. It is fast, but it produces the same bland text everyone else gets, and sometimes invents facts that could cost you the interview.
The tool is not the problem. The instructions are. Good prompts are the difference between an AI that writes "a results-driven professional with a passion for excellence" and one that helps you prove what you have actually done.
That is why we built the AI Career Prompt Studio.
What you get
1. The Prompt Playbook (Word and PDF, 36 pages). It has 60 ready-to-use prompts in 8 modules. Each prompt gives you:
- a "use it when" line, so you pick the right one
- a copy-and-paste prompt with yellow fill-in fields
- a level-up follow-up, because the first answer is only a draft
- a human check, telling you what to verify before you use the result
2. The Excel Prompt Studio. You fill in your profile and the job advert once. Then you choose any prompt from a drop-down and it completes itself, ready to paste into any chat AI. It also includes:
- a Win Bank that turns "what I did" into strong CV bullets and rates them Weak, Okay or Strong
- an Outreach CRM that works out follow-up dates, tells you what to do today and shows your reply rate
3. Six workflow recipes. These chain the prompts into routines, such as "Apply in 25 minutes", "Public Service Pack", "Interview in 48 Hours" and "Zero to First Application".
The 8 modules
| Module | What it helps you do |
|---|---|
| A. Foundations | Remove private details before sharing, build a clean master profile, find your achievements, teach the AI your writing voice, decode a job advert |
| B. CV & Application Documents | Tailor your CV, rewrite weak bullets, check your Z83 against your CV, explain a career gap, write a first-job CV |
| C. Cover & Motivation Letters | Cover letters, email applications, formal public service motivation letters, learnership letters, follow-ups |
| D. LinkedIn | Headline, About section, experience entries, keywords, a profile audit and a posting plan |
| E. Outreach & Networking | Cold emails, connection notes, referral asks, WhatsApp messages and follow-up sequences |
| F. Interview Preparation | Predicted questions, STAR stories, Batho Pele answers, a full mock panel interview and a debrief |
| G. Offers, Salary & Moving On | Salary research, negotiation scripts, comparing offers, resignation letters |
| H. Strategy & Safety | A 90-day plan, weekly reviews, vacancy triage, a job scam check and skill-gap plans |
Why this is different from other prompt packs
Most prompt packs are a short PDF of generic prompts written for another country. This one is built for how South Africans actually apply:
- Z83 and CV consistency. A mismatch between your form and your CV can hurt your application. One prompt compares them line by line.
- Batho Pele answers. Public service panels often test the eight principles. The pack helps you answer with your own real examples.
- Learnerships and first jobs. There are prompts for people with little or no experience, built from school, volunteering and casual work.
- WhatsApp and low-data reality. Messages are written to work on WhatsApp, and the planning prompts allow for limited data.
- Scam protection. A dedicated prompt checks adverts for the red flags of fake vacancies, such as fees for registration or "placement".
- It fills itself in. The Excel Studio saves you from retyping your details into every prompt.
The benefits
You save time. Once your profile is set up, tailoring a CV and writing a letter for a new vacancy is a routine of minutes, not an evening.
Your applications get more consistent. Using the same checks every time means fewer mistakes with dates, documents and closing dates.
You sound like yourself. The pack teaches the AI your voice, so your letters don't sound like everyone else's.
You prepare better. Instead of hoping for easy questions, you rehearse the likely ones, build STAR stories and practice with a mock panel.
You stay organized. The CRM and weekly scoreboard show where your search is stuck: applications, replies or interviews.
You stay safer. The privacy scrub and scam check protect your personal information, which matters when fake job adverts are common.
Guidelines: how to get the best results
These eight rules are built into the pack. Follow them even if you use other prompts.
- Facts only. Never let the AI invent employers, dates, qualifications or numbers. If you cannot prove it, do not claim it.
- Protect your privacy. Do not paste ID numbers, bank details or passwords into any AI chat. Run the Privacy Scrub prompt first.
- Verify everything. Check every name, date, figure and closing date against the advert and your documents.
- The advert is the boss. Follow the employer's instructions on forms, documents and how to apply, even if the AI suggests something else.
- Keep your voice. Edit every draft until it sounds like you.
- One job, one tailored application. Do not send the same CV everywhere.
- Read it aloud. If you stumble reading it, you will stumble explaining it in an interview.
- AI drafts, you decide. You are responsible for everything you submit.
Five habits for better answers
- Paste the real advert and your real CV. The AI cannot guess.
- Ask the AI to interview you one question at a time before it writes.
- Ask for three versions and combine the best lines.
- Always send the level-up follow-up. This is where most of the improvement comes from.
- Start a new chat when the conversation drifts, and paste your master profile again.
Motivation: why it is worth the effort
Job hunting is tiring. You can spend weeks sending applications and hear nothing, and after a while it starts to feel personal.
Often it isn't. Many applications fall away because of avoidable problems: a CV that does not match the advert, a missing document, a vague summary, or an interview where the answers were never practised. Those problems can be fixed.
The goal here is not to let AI apply for you. It is to use AI the way a good career coach would: to ask better questions, point out what is missing, and help you say true things more clearly. You still supply the facts and make the decisions.
Small improvements add up. A clearer CV, a better letter, five careful applications instead of thirty rushed ones, and a message to the right person can change how your search goes. This pack gives you a structure so each week moves you forward.
A look inside: a sample prompt
Here is the kind of prompt you will find (Module A, the Job Ad Decoder). The yellow fields are where you add your details.
Analyze this job advert for the post of [JOB TITLE] at [EMPLOYER] (reference [REFERENCE NO.]). Give me the must-have requirements separated from the nice-to-haves, the top 12 keywords to mirror in my CV, what problem the employer is really trying to solve, every compulsory document and submission instruction, and anything unclear that I should confirm with the employer. Quote the advert's own wording where possible.
The playbook then gives you a level-up follow-up and a human check, so you know what to do next and what to verify.
How it works
- Buy and download the Word playbook, PDF and Excel Prompt Studio.
- Remove private details with the Privacy Scrub prompt (A1).
- Fill in your profile in the Excel file once (or use the Word prompts directly).
- Choose a prompt, add your job advert, and copy the finished prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI or any chat AI. Free versions are enough.
- Check and edit the answer using the human check, then apply before the closing date.
Who it is for
- Job seekers applying for government and private sector posts
- School leavers, graduates and learnership applicants with little experience
- People changing careers or returning after a gap
- Anyone preparing for a panel interview
- People who want to network without feeling awkward

Questions people ask
Do I need a paid AI account?
No. Free versions of popular chat AIs are enough for everything in the pack.
Do I need to be good with computers?
No. If you can copy and paste, you can use it. The Word playbook works on its own, and the Excel file is optional.
Will it guarantee me a job?
No. Nobody can honestly promise that. It helps you prepare stronger, more consistent applications and better interviews.
Will the AI invent things about me?
It can, which is why the pack includes Guard Rules that tell it to use only your facts, plus a human check on every prompt. You must still read and verify everything.
Does it include the Z83 form?
No. Download the latest Z83 from the official source or the job advert. The pack helps you check that your CV and form match.
Can I use it for private sector jobs?
Yes. Most prompts work for any job. A few are designed for public service posts, such as the Z83 check and the Batho Pele prompts.
What do I need to open the files?
Microsoft Word or Google Docs for the playbook, and Excel or Google Sheets for the Prompt Studio. A PDF reader opens the PDF.
Can I share it with friends?
It is licensed for your personal use. If a friend needs it, they can get their own copy.
