Senior Driver Operator Job at Department of Agriculture, Modimolle (Limpopo) — Apply by 10 July 2026 - Job Description

Introduction

The Department of Agriculture (DOA) is hiring a Senior Driver Operator for its Infrastructure Support directorate in Modimolle, Limpopo. Advertised under reference number 3/3/1/45/2026, this Level 4 government post pays R201,093 per annum, with applications closing on 10 July 2026 at 16:00.

This isn't your average driving job. It's a specialised technical role for someone experienced in operating drilling rigs and earthmoving equipment, with real responsibility for building and maintaining agricultural infrastructure across the region.

About the Company

The Senior Driver Operator role sits within the Infrastructure Support team and focuses heavily on borehole drilling, construction, and equipment maintenance. You'll be operating specialised drilling and earthmoving machinery to build boreholes, construct agricultural infrastructure, and maintain disease control fencing — all while keeping safety, equipment care, and proper documentation front of mind.
It's a physically demanding, technically skilled position suited to someone who already has serious field experience in drilling or heavy equipment operation, rather than someone simply looking for a standard driving role.

Responsibilities

In this role, you'll be expected to:
• Produce boreholes and construct agricultural infrastructure to specification and recognised standards
• Prepare access roads at construction and drilling sites
• Construct, erect, and repair disease control fencing (both new and existing)
• Drill, test, and repair existing boreholes
• Operate specialised drilling and earthmoving equipment
• Transport materials, goods, equipment, and officials safely
• Apply safety and precautionary measures consistently on site
• Ensure ongoing maintenance of drilling and construction equipment
• Comply fully with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act
• Service equipment according to schedule and quality-assure completed maintenance work
• Clean, lubricate, and inspect machinery, reporting any defects promptly
• Keep accurate job records, equipment registers, and vehicle/equipment log sheets

Required Qualifications

To be considered for this post, applicants need:
• An NQF Level 3 qualification (Grade 10 Certificate)
• A minimum of 5 years' driving, operating, and drilling experience
• Knowledge of safety standards prescribed by statute
• Correct, competent use of tools and equipment, including inventory and maintenance know-how
• Strong communication and judgement skills
• Excellent hearing and vision — essential given the heavy machinery and field conditions involved

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted before 10 July 2026 at 16:00, with a completed Z83 form and a detailed CV in PDF format (maximum 10MB).
Submit your application:
• By email: SDOrecruit45@nda.gov.za
• By hand delivery: 20 Steve Biko Street, Agriculture Place, Arcadia, Pretoria, 0002 (during office hours)

Enquiries: Mr Koos du Plessis — (049) 846 8535 / (063) 357 8644
Equity target: African Females and Persons with Disabilities
Due to high application volumes, the Department will not send confirmation of receipt. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and if you've heard nothing after 3 months from the closing date, treat your application as unsuccessful.

TIPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR APPLICATION

• Be specific about your drilling and equipment experience. "5 years' experience" is the minimum bar — list the actual machinery you've operated (drilling rigs, earthmoving equipment, etc.) and the type of projects you've worked on.
• Mention any borehole or fencing construction work directly. These are core duties, so prior hands-on involvement in either should be front and centre in your CV.
• Highlight your safety record. Since OHS Act compliance is a major part of the job, any safety certifications or a clean safety track record are worth calling out explicitly.
• Don't underestimate the admin side. The role includes keeping job records and log sheets — if you have any experience with equipment registers or maintenance documentation, mention it.
• Get your Grade 10 certificate and any driving/operating certifications ready and certified ahead of time, since you'll need certified copies if shortlisted.
• Submit early and avoid relying on email at the last minute — the Department has been explicit that late applications due to technical or server issues will not be accepted.
• Apply only for this post in this submission. If you're also interested in other Department of Agriculture vacancies, submit fully separate applications for each
