Team Leader Job at Department of Employment and Labour, Labour Centre Polokwane - Job Description

Introduction

The Department of Employment and Labor is hiring a Team Leader, reference HR4/4/6/28, based at the Labor Centre in Polokwane. The post pays R413,001 per annum, with applications closing on 10 July 2026.
This role is ideal for a labor law professional with inspection and enforcement experience, ready to take on a leadership role overseeing compliance investigations and court appearances on behalf of the state.

About the Company

The Team Leader role manages labour legislation compliance inspections and investigations at the Polokwane Labour Centre. You'll be planning and executing inspections, leading investigations into reported labour law contraventions, and even appearing in court as a state witness — alongside broader management responsibilities for regional inspection planning and reporting.

Responsibilities

As Team Leader, you will:

• Plan and independently conduct substantive inspections to ensure compliance with labour legislation, including the BCEA and LRA
• Plan and execute independent investigations into reported labour legislation contraventions, enforcing as necessary and appearing in court as a state witness
• Plan, allocate, and conduct regular proactive (Blitz) inspections, including compiling and consolidating resulting reports
• Conduct regular advocacy campaigns on labor legislation
• Manage the finalization of case files received and investigated by Inspectors
• Contribute at management level to planning, drafting, and maintaining regional inspection plans and reports, including statistical analysis

Required Qualifications

To qualify for this post, you'll need:
• A three-year National Diploma (NQF 6) or undergraduate Bachelor's Degree (NQF 7) in Labour Relations, Labour Law, LLB, or BCom Law
• 2 years' functional experience in Inspection and Enforcement Services
• A valid driver's licence
• Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, the Employment Services Act, Labour Relations Act, BCEA, OHS Act, COIDA, SABS Codes, Unemployment Insurance Act, UI Contributions Act, Employment Equity Act, and Immigration Act
• Facilitation, planning, organising, computer literacy, interpersonal, conflict handling, negotiation, problem-solving, interviewing, presentation, innovation, analytical, monitoring, evaluation, performance management, and communication skills

Note: Priority will be given to Coloureds and Whites.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you haven't heard back within 8 weeks of the closing date, treat your application as unsuccessful.

TIPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR APPLICATION

• Highlight any prior court appearance or state witness experience, since this is a specifically named duty that not all applicants will have direct exposure to.
• Show evidence of independent investigation management, especially involving labour legislation contraventions.
• Mention regional reporting or inspection plan contributions, since this role works at a level above individual case handling, contributing to broader regional planning.
• Reference specific legislation by name — BCEA, LRA, COIDA — wherever you've directly applied or enforced it.

• Note the qualification flexibility: a three-year diploma OR a Bachelor's degree (LLB, BCom Law, or Labour Relations) is acceptable — don't assume you need the higher qualification if you hold the diploma.
• Submit your Z83 and CV as a single combined PDF, quoting reference HR4/4/6/28 accurately.
• Be ready for both pre-entry assessments, plus be prepared to discuss your experience leading or coordinating a team, since this is a Team Leader-level post.
