Chief Artisan Grade A Job at Department of Correctional Services, Mangaung - Job Description
Introduction
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is recruiting a Chief Artisan Grade A, reference FSNC 2026/07/01, based at Mangaung in the Free State and Northern Cape Region. This post offers R499,470 per annum, with applications closing on 13 July 2026 at 15:45.
This is a senior trade leadership role for a Red Seal-qualified artisan with a decade of post-qualification experience, looking to step into technical management within a correctional facility environment
About the Company
The Chief Artisan Grade A role is a leadership position overseeing technical services across field, workshop, and technical office operations at Mangaung. You'll be managing technicians, artisans, and associated staff, while also taking responsibility for budgeting input, quality assurance, human resources, and asset management within the technical services function.
It's a role that blends hands-on trade expertise with genuine managerial responsibility — less time at the workbench, more time overseeing the people and processes that keep technical operations running.
Responsibilities
As Chief Artisan Grade A, you will:
• Manage technical services and support in conjunction with Technicians, Artisans, and associates across field, workshop, and technical office activities
• Promote safety in line with statutory and regulatory requirements
• Provide input into technical manuals, standard drawings, and procedures to incorporate new technology
• Ensure quality assurance in line with specifications
• Manage administrative and related functions across the technical services unit
• Provide input into the budgeting process
• Compile and submit reports as required
• Provide and consolidate input into the technical operational plan
• Update relevant databases
• Manage human resources, finances, and assets within the unit
• Manage performance information across the team
Required Qualifications
To qualify for this post, you'll need:
• An appropriate Trade Test Certificate underwritten by the Manpower Training Act (Red Seal)
• A minimum of 10 years' post-qualification experience as an Artisan or Artisan Foreman
• A valid driver's licence (not required for applicants with a disability)
• Strong project management skills
• Technical design and analysis knowledge
• Competency in computer-aided technical applications
• Knowledge of legal compliance requirements
• Strong technical report writing and consulting skills
• Production and process knowledge
• Problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills
• Teamwork, creativity, and change management abilities
• Financial management knowledge
• Customer focus, communication, planning, and organising skills

• By hand delivery: 103 Zastron Street, Agrimed Building, Bloemfontein, 9300
You must complete the Z83 application form in full and attach only a detailed CV along with supporting documents in PDF format, clearly stating the correct reference number for this post (FSNC 2026/07/01).
Enquiries: Ms Mokuni NJ / Ms Molutsoane N / Ms Radebe T / Ms Ramncwana B — 082 306 9027
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you haven't heard back within 3 months of the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful. Please don't call the Department to check on application progress.
TIPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR APPLICATION
• Quantify your 10 years of post-qualification experience clearly. State exactly what trades, projects, or teams you've managed as an Artisan or Artisan Foreman — vague experience claims won't stand out in a competitive applicant pool.
• Highlight any prior supervisory or team leadership experience, since this post is as much about managing people and processes as it is about technical skill.
• Mention experience at Mangaung Correctional Centre if you have it — the Department has explicitly stated this will be considered an added advantage.
• Include your Red Seal trade test certificate details clearly. Don't just say "qualified artisan" — name the certificate and trade.
• Be ready for two pre-entry assessments — a practical exercise testing technical suitability, and a separate integrity (ethical conduct) assessment.
• Attach your supporting documents as a single PDF, correctly labelled with the reference number FSNC 2026/07/01, to avoid processing delays or disqualification.
• Apply well before the deadline. It's the applicant's sole responsibility to ensure the application reaches DCS before the closing date — late submissions, regardless of reason, won't be considered.
