Diesel Mechanic: Gough Island | Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment | 15-Month Contract - Job Description
Introduction
Are you a skilled diesel mechanic looking for an experience unlike anything else? The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment needs a qualified Diesel Mechanic to join the technical team at their remote Gough Island base in the South Atlantic. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that offers excellent pay and an unforgettable adventure
About the Company
The Gough Island base relies entirely on diesel-powered generators for its electricity supply, making the Diesel Mechanic one of the most essential members of the expedition team. You will be responsible for keeping the power generators running at all times, as well as maintaining a wide range of mechanical and infrastructure systems that keep the base operational in one of the most extreme environments on earth.
Beyond your core mechanical duties, you will support the base engineer's technical team with a broad range of tasks, and like all expedition members, you will be expected to assist with general base duties including cargo handling and stock management. There is no possibility of early return — the full fifteen-month commitment from September 2026 to October 2027 is non-negotiable. Candidates must be physically fit, mentally resilient, and genuinely comfortable with remote, isolated living for an extended period.
Responsibilities
• Maintain and operate power generators and all related equipment
• Maintain and repair air-conditioning, refrigeration, water reticulation and wastewater systems
• Replace and repair mechanical pumps, valves and pipework
• Maintain and repair forklifts, telescopic cranes, portable generators and transfer pumps
• Operate forklifts and cargo handling equipment
• Maintain field huts and field equipment
• Report to the base engineer and support the wider technical team
• Prepare monthly and annual reports and conduct stock-takes
Required Qualifications
• A National NTC3 Certificate or equivalent qualification in a related field
• Minimum of three years' post-trade experience
• Competency in diesel engine and generator maintenance, diagnostics, repairs and overhaul
• Knowledge of engine management systems and experience with electronic diagnostic tools
• Ability to interpret diagnostic results accurately
• Familiarity with good workshop practices, correct use of tools, and current health and safety policies
• Computer literate with good verbal and written communication skills
• Experience on earthmoving and material handling equipment would be an advantage
How to Apply
1. Download the new Z83 form from www.gov.za/documents and complete it fully. An unsigned or incomplete Z83 will disqualify your application.
2. Prepare an updated CV that clearly lists your NTC3 qualification, your three or more years of post-trade experience, and the specific equipment and systems you have worked on.
3. Combine your Z83 and CV into a single PDF. Do not send JPEG, image or zipped files.
4. Email your application to Recruitmentcoastal@dffe.gov.za before 16:00 on 06 July 2026. Write Diesel Mechanic: Gough Island and reference number OC11/2026 in the subject line.
5. Alternatively, post or hand deliver to: The Director: Integrated Human Resource Management, Private Bag X4390, Cape Town, 8000, or hand deliver to 63 Strand Street, Cape Town.
6. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for a medical examination and psychometric assessment at no cost to them.
TIPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR APPLICATION
• The 37% additional benefit in lieu of service benefits is a significant financial bonus on top of the base salary — calculate the total package carefully as it makes this post very competitive financially.
• List every generator brand and model you have worked on, as well as any engine management systems. The more specific you are, the better your chances.
• Experience with forklifts, cranes or earthmoving equipment should be highlighted prominently — it is listed as an advantage and will differentiate you from other applicants.
• A medical examination is compulsory for shortlisted candidates. Ensure you are in good physical health — Gough Island is a demanding environment with no hospital nearby.
• The isolation factor is real and the department takes it seriously. Reflect carefully on whether spending over a year in a remote location suits your personal circumstances before you commit.
