Communications/Electronics Engineer: Gough Island | Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment | 15-Month Contract - Job Description

Introduction

This is not your ordinary government job. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is looking for a skilled Communications and Electronics Engineer to spend fifteen months at Gough Island — one of the most remote and extraordinary locations on the planet. If you are technically gifted, mentally strong, and ready for the adventure of a lifetime, read on.

About the Company

Gough Island is a remote South African territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, thousands of kilometres from the nearest city. The Department maintains a research base there, and this engineer will be responsible for keeping all communication systems running — from satellite links and radio equipment to the base's IT network and telephone systems. Without functioning communications, the entire expedition is isolated, making this one of the most critical technical roles on the island.

You will work as part of a small, close-knit technical team led by the base engineer, and you will be expected to carry out additional duties beyond your core function as all expedition members do. This includes cargo handling, stock-takes, report writing and other general base duties. There is absolutely no option to return to South Africa before October 2027, so this commitment requires serious personal reflection before applying. Candidates must be physically fit, mentally resilient, and comfortable living and working in extreme conditions for an extended period

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain and repair all communication services and equipment at the Antarctic base including satellite, radio, IT, GPS, alarm and telephone systems
• Operate cargo handling equipment
• Report to the base engineer and support the broader technical team with additional base-related functions
• Prepare monthly and annual reports
• Conduct stock-takes to order spares and equipment
• Perform non-technical duties as required by the expedition

Required Qualifications

• A National Diploma or Degree in Electronic, Electrical (light current), IT, Engineering or a related qualification
• Minimum of three years' post-qualification experience
• Competency in electronic maintenance, diagnostics and repairs with proven fault-finding skills
• Preferably experience in: V-Sat Satellite Systems, IT network management with Linux servers and routers, HF and VHF 2-way radio, PABX and VOIP telephone systems, PC maintenance, fire detection systems, GPS equipment
• Competent in the use of an Oscilloscope and Spectrum Analyser
• Computer literate with good verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently under extreme pressure without supervision
• Ability to work well in a small team over an extended period

How to Apply

1. Download the new Z83 application form from www.gov.za/documents.
2. Complete all required sections fully and sign the form. Unsigned forms will not be accepted.
3. Prepare a detailed CV that clearly shows your qualifications and your three or more years of post-qualification experience, with specific technical systems you have worked on listed clearly.
4. Combine your Z83 and CV into one single PDF file and attach it to your email. JPEG or picture files will not be accepted.
5. Email your application to Recruitmentcoastal@dffe.gov.za before 16:00 on 06 July 2026. Write the job title and reference number OC10/2026 in the subject line.
6. Alternatively, post or hand deliver to: The Director: Integrated Human Resource Management, Private Bag X4390, Cape Town, 8000, or hand deliver to 63 Strand Street, Cape Town.

TIPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR APPLICATION

• Shortlisted candidates will undergo a rigorous medical examination and psychometric assessment at no cost to the applicant. Ensure you are in good physical and mental health before applying.
• Your Linux and networking experience is particularly valuable — spell out the specific systems and server environments you have managed in your CV.
• Living on Gough Island for a full year with a small group of people is a unique psychological challenge. The department will assess your suitability for isolated living — be honest with yourself about whether this lifestyle suits you before applying.
• List every communication system you have hands-on experience with. The more specific you are, the stronger your application will be.
• This is a contract post — it ends in October 2027. Plan your personal and financial affairs accordingly before committing.C
