Introduction

The National Department of Agriculture (NDA) is inviting applications for a Resource Conservation Inspector position within the Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction Directorate, based in De Aar, Northern Cape. This is a hands-on, field-based government role suited to candidates passionate about environmental management, pest control, and conservation work. Applications close on 17 August 2026.

About the Company

This is a Level 08 position offering an annual salary of R413 001. The successful candidate will be responsible for surveillance, response, and control of migratory pest outbreaks — including locusts, blackfly, and quelea birds — across the Northern Cape region, alongside conducting ecological risk assessments and training future pest control officers.

Responsibilities

• Monitor, verify, and respond to locust, blackfly, and quelea bird outbreaks
• Conduct ecological risk assessments in affected areas
• Organise, plan, and manage pest control operations
• Inspect and monitor control units and evaluate post-control impact
• Administer trials to determine correct chemical dosage rates
• Manage the safe storage of chemicals used in control operations
• Identify research needs and recommend appropriate interventions
• Conduct training and awareness campaigns for prospective pest outbreak controllers
• Capture and map migratory pest outbreak data

Required Qualifications

• Grade 12 Certificate plus a National Diploma (NQF 6) in Agriculture, Environmental Management, Nature Conservation, or Pest Management
• Minimum two (2) years relevant experience
• Knowledge of the Agricultural Pest Act, National Environmental Management Act, National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act, and Water Act
• Familiarity with the PFMA, Labour Relations Act, and Public Service Regulations
• GIS (Geographical Information System) skills
• Strong communication, leadership, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities
• Project planning, inspection, and auditing skills
• A valid driver's licence
• Willingness to travel extensively and work extended hours
