The National Department of Agriculture (NDA) has opened applications for a Scientist Production position within the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Directorate, based in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About the Company

This position falls under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) and offers a competitive all-inclusive salary package of R791 604 – R1 189 767 per annum, depending on grade (A-C). The successful candidate will work within the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Directorate, playing a key role in developing scientific methodologies, conducting research, and ensuring regulatory compliance in agricultural product testing.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement scientific methodologies, systems, and testing procedures
• Identify client needs for new analysis methods and develop suitable interventions
• Provide scientific advice, data, and support to stakeholders
• Perform scientific analysis, regulatory functions, and interpret research data
• Compile technical reports and formulate proposals based on findings
• Conduct basic and applied research, publishing and presenting findings where relevant
• Liaise with relevant scientific bodies and councils
• Mentor, train, and supervise junior scientific staff
• Manage staff performance and development within the unit

Required Qualifications

• Grade 12 Certificate plus a BSc Honors degree in Chemistry
• Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist
• Minimum three (3) years post-qualification experience
• Working knowledge of the PFMA, Agricultural Products Standard Act 119 of 1990, and Liquor Product Act 60 of 1989
• Strong analytical, research, project management, and technical report writing skills
• Computer literacy and proficiency in computer-aided scientific applications
• A valid driver's license
• Willingness to work extended hours and handle hazardous chemicals
