About this Sessional Medical Officer (Emergency Department) position
Introduction
Far East Rand Hospital needs two sessional Medical Officers for its Emergency Department. You are paid by the hour, and the rate depends on whether you're appointed at Grade 1, 2 or 3. If you work well under pressure and like fast, hands-on medicine, this is the one of four sessional posts to look at first.

Responsibilities
• Triage patients and sort them by acuity
• Resuscitate patients, including advanced airway management, inserting CVPs and ICDs, and managing cardiac arrests following ACLS protocols
• Manage trauma and carry out other procedural interventions
• Decide where patients go next, make referrals and keep proper records
Required Qualifications
• A minimum qualification (MBChB/MBBCh) that allows HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner
• Proof of current HPCSA registration as an independent medical practitioner for 2026/2027
• Good work ethics: reliability, discipline and the ability to work under pressure
• The ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team, with sound decision-making and a solution-oriented attitude
• An advantage: BLS, ATLS, ACLS, PALS and an additional Diploma in Primary Emergency Care
