Inspector BCEA (X2 Posts) | Department of Employment and Labour | Kariega and Gqeberha - Job Description
Introduction
The Department of Employment and Labour is hiring two BCEA Inspectors in the Eastern Cape — one based in Kariega and one in Gqeberha. If you have a labour law qualification and a valid driver's licence, this is a fantastic opportunity to launch or advance your career in labour inspection.
About the Company
BCEA Inspectors are on the ground enforcers of South Africa's labour laws. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act sets out the minimum standards that every employer must meet — from working hours and overtime pay to annual leave and notice periods. As an Inspector, your job is to visit workplaces, check for compliance, investigate complaints from workers, and take enforcement action when employers fall short.
This is an active, field-based role. You will spend a significant portion of your time visiting businesses of all sizes across your allocated area. You will need to be confident engaging with both employers and employees, able to assess complex workplace situations quickly, and comfortable representing the state in court when required. It is a role that carries real authority and real responsibility — and one that makes a genuine difference to working people every day
Responsibilities
• Plan and conduct thorough inspections to ensure compliance with BCEA, LRA, EEA, UIA, COIDA, OHS Act and UI Contribution Act
• Independently investigate reported contraventions of labour legislation and enforce where necessary, including appearing in court as a state witness
• Conduct regular proactive BLITZ inspections and compile reports from these inspections
• Plan and conduct advocacy campaigns on all labour legislation and compile impact reports
• Contribute to regional inspection plans and consolidated statistical reports
Required Qualifications
• A three-year relevant tertiary qualification in Labour Relations, BCOM Law, or LLB
• A valid driver's licence
• Knowledge of: Departmental policies and procedures, Skills Development Act, LRA, BCEA, Skills Development Levies Act, OHS Act, COIDA, SABS Codes, UIA, UI Contributions Act, Employment Equity Act, Immigration Act
• Skills: Facilitation, Planning and Organising, Computer literacy, Interpersonal skills, Conflict handling, Negotiation, Problem solving, Interviewing, Presentation, Innovative thinking, Analytical skills, Verbal and written communication
How to Apply
1. Download the new Z83 form from www.gov.za/documents. The old Z83 will not be accepted.
2. Complete Sections A, B, C and D in full. Sections E, F and G may refer to your CV, but Section F's re-appointment question must be answered and signed.
3. Indicate clearly in your application which post and which location you are applying for — Kariega or Gqeberha — and quote the correct reference number in your subject line.
4. Prepare a detailed CV showing your qualification and any relevant inspection or legal experience.
5. For Kariega: Email to Jobs-ECUHG@labour.gov.za or hand deliver to 15A Chase Street, Kariega, 6230, or post to PO Box 562, Uitenhage, 6230.
6. For Gqeberha: Email to Jobs-ECPLZ@LABOUR.gov.za or hand deliver to 116-134 Govan Mbeki Avenue, VSN Building, Central, Gqeberha, 6000, or post to Private Bag X6045, Gqeberha, 6000.
TIPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR APPLICATION
• There are two separate posts — apply only for the location you want, using the correct reference number and email address. Sending to the wrong address will disqualify your application.
• These posts are open to a broad range of EE candidates including persons with disabilities. Complete your Z83 equity section carefully.
• Court experience or experience appearing in any formal adjudication forum is a big advantage — mention it specifically in your CV if you have it.
• Your knowledge of the full range of labour legislation will be tested at the assessment stage. Study the Acts listed in the requirements before your interview.
• A driver's licence is compulsory. Both Kariega and Gqeberha require field work across wide geographic areas.
