Assistant Director: Business Application and Support – Department of Basic Education - Job Description
Introduction
The Department of Basic Education is seeking a technically skilled Assistant Director to lead support, testing, and development work on its SA-SAMS system and related in-house software, based in Pretoria
About the Company
This role sits within the Branch: Business Intelligence, Chief Directorate: Information and Management Systems, Directorate: Education Management Information Systems.
Responsibilities
• Lead a team supporting and testing DBE software, particularly SA-SAMS
• Design and develop ad hoc survey, data collection, and reporting tools
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues in Access and SQL databases
• Evaluate and test new or modified software against user requirements and guidelines
• Write and verify quality standards and test procedures
• Plan and author test cases, and build automated tests into test suites
• Develop tools for test management, execution, and reporting
• Monitor system performance post-implementation to prevent recurring issues
• Document program evaluation, testing, and correction processes
• Facilitate problem-solving between end users and SA-SAMS developers
• Compile monthly, quarterly, and annual progress reports
• Support standardisation of SA-SAMS and provincial data warehouses
• Assist with training, advocacy, and change management around SA-SAMS
• Liaise with policy owners on requirement management for system version releases
• Support the SA-SAMS Modernisation Project and related systems
• Handle ad hoc requests and support the Director on related projects
Required Qualifications
• Three-year post-matric qualification (NQF Level 6) or SAQA equivalent in Computer Science, IT, Software Development, or related field
• 3 years' relevant supervisory-level experience in software development and testing within a Microsoft environment (VB.net, VB6, ADO, ODBC, MS Access, SQL)
• Advanced Microsoft Office skills
• Experience reviewing requirements and developing/automating test cases
• Strong knowledge of SA-SAMS, user support, and database support
• Experience in the education sector and project management
• White and black box testing experience at unit, integration, and system levels
• Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Self-starter able to work with minimal guidance
• Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel
• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and teamwork
• Good verbal and written communication skills
